Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Bowen worked at the Glen Innes Experimental Farm prior to his enlistment. His father stated on his Roll of Honour form that "He was exceedingly proud of his battalion and his enthusiasm would have carried him far, had he lived."

Walter enlisted with a younger brother, 3917 Audrey Bowen, who survived the war despite being wounded three times and gassed.

Walter Bowen only joined the 20th Battalion in the front line at Armentieres 10 days before he was killed in action, aged 21.
