Biographical details:
Ernest was the son of John and Elizabeth Evans. He disembarked at Alexandria on 6 January. He transferred to the 51st Battalion on 1 March 1916 and then joined the 13th machine Gun Company on 22 March. His unit was sent to France on 12 June. During action on 14 August at Chalk Pit, Pozieres, he sustained a wound and fracture to his left foot and after receiving treatment in the field and at Boulogne, was sent to hospital at Warrington, England on 18 August. Ernest was granted furlough on 4 December, but was absent without leave on 18 December, reporting back for duty on 4 January 1917. Surprisingly, no disciplinary action was taken for this absence. However, when absent without leave again from 4 February to 6 February, he had to forfeit 7 days’ pay. Ernest was transferred to the 70th Battalion at Wareham, then Weymouth before being returned to Australia on 22 July and discharged on 4 October 1917(1)
Fruit Block Details:
Ernest occupied Block 393.of 9.5 acres. Plantings as of 17 August 1938 comprised 5.25 acres of sultanas, 0.75 acres of currants and 2.25 acres of acres of gordos. The house and trees occupied 0.5 acres, with racks, greenery and stables etc taking up 0.75 acres. Ernest complained to the Royal Commission on the Soldier-Settler Scheme about the water rates he was being charged on his block(2).
Other Anecdotal Information:
Ernest married Hilda Gladys Quinn at the Holy Trinity Church, Adelaide in 1924. They had one child,Thelma Gladys born in Berri on 21 March 1925. Ernest died at Warradale on 12 December 1967, aged 70(3).
