Corporal Ernest John Findley MiD (Service No:4416) enlisted in the AIF on 31 January 1916 as a Private with 21st Infantry Battalion. On 21 March 1916 Private Findley embarked from Melbourne for Egypt on board RMS Orontes and transferred to ANZAC Provost Police Corps on 29 April 1916 in Alexandria. Private Findley embarked from Alexandria for England on board the Tunisian on 3 August 1916 and was in France on 25 November 1916 when he was promoted to Lance Corporal. Lance Corporal Findley was attached to Australian Army Provost Corps when he was awarded a Mention in Despatches (MiD) on 21 September 1918. He embarked from Tilbury for the RTA on 3 July 1919 on board HT Zealandic and was a Corporal attached to the Provost Corps at Discharge on 17 October 1919.

Born in 1891 in Geelong Victoria, Ernest was second of four children of George Findlay (b1858 in Aberdeen, Scotland) and Margaret Anne Mansfield (b1858 in Moolap, Victoria). George (a Labourer) and Margaret married in 1885 in Geelong, Victoria where they settled and raised their family before moving to Melbourne in the early 1900s. George was a Labourer.

Ernest was a Farmer in Neerim, Victoria in 1911 when he married Matilda Margaret Smith (b1892 in Neerim, Victoria). Ernest and Matilda lived at Icy Creek and Fumina via Neerim where Ernest was a Farmer. Matilda died in 1929 and Ernest in 1958.
