William Reycraft was born in New Zealand, and raised in Beaconsfield, Tasmania. He enlisted in Brisbane, Queensland and was posted to the 48th Battalion after arriving in France.
His younger brother, 7295 Pte. Cecil Layton Reycraft 16th Battalion AIF, had died of wounds in Belgium on the 7 August 1917, aged 29.
They were the sons of John Calver Reycraft and Mary Ann Reycraft, of Beaconsfield, Tasmania. The father, John Reycraft had passed away in Beaconsfield in 1903 and their mother received their medals and effects.
