Eric Albert Grasby left Melbourne on board H.M. Themistocles on 4 August 1917, disembarking at Glascow on 2 October. He was sent from Southampton to France with the 50th Battalion on 16 January 1918. Bert was treated for pyrexia by the 13th Australian Field Ambulance and was admitted to hospital at Codford, England with mumps on 9 March. He rejoined his unit in France on 9 June. The 2nd Australian Field Ambulance treated him for tonsilitis for 3 days in April 1919 and 55 Clearing Station treated his scarlet fever for 12 days later that month prior to transferring Bert to the 3rd Auxiliary Hospital at Dartford, England. Bert returned to Australia on the Ulysses on 22 July and was discharged on 1 October.
