Harold was the sixth of nine children of George Hearn (b1879 in Kent, England) and Elizabeth Mary O'Keefe (b1884 in Innisfail, QLD. George was four years of age when he and his family arrived in Cooktown, QLD in 1883 on board the Almora. George (a Miner) and Elizabeth married in 1903 in Innisfail, QLD where they settled and George worked as a Miner and Carter. In 1916 George enlisted in the AIF (Private; Service No:6261) and died in hospital from wounds received in France in 1919. Elizabeth - with nine young children - remarried Charles Strange in December 1919 and together they had four children. The family moved to Brisbane in 1921 where Charles was a Labourer.

Harold was a Builder's Labourer in Brisbane when he enlisted in the ACMF in May 1941 (Private; Service No:Q99782). In October that year he married Lillian Jane Cowell (b1915 in Gympie, QLD) - Lillian was working as a Shop Assistant. Harold was attached to 113 General Transport Coy when he was Discharged in November 1945.

Following Lillian's death in 1949, Harold remained in Brisbane where he worked as a Metal Finisher and then Manager. Harold died in 1984.
