Edwin’s brother, 375 Pte. Robert Arthur Chippindall 5th Battalion AIF had also enlisted in August 1914 and was mortally wounded at the Anzac landing, dying of his wounds in Egypt on 17 May 1915, aged 24.
Edwin’s eldest brother, 1922 Sergeant Henry Dawson Chippindall 14th Battalion AIF, was also killed in action, during the August offensives at Gallipoli.
Edwin, only 19 years of age, had served on Gallipoli from the day of the Anzac landing. He was sent home to Australia a few weeks later, on 1 September 1915. Unusually, no reason was given for his return to Australia.
