Frank joined the 3rd Light Horse and left Adelaide with his unit on board HMAT A 17 Port Lincoln on 22 October 1914. He fought at Gallipoli from 9 May 1915 until the evacuation in December. Frank then joined the Western Front Force, serving there prior to being appointed a Driver at Kantara West on 29 June 1916. He contracted Malignant Malaria on 6 October 1918 and was hospitalised at Jericho where he died 4 days later. Private Frank Hicks was buried at Jericho Military Cemetery on 10 October 1918. Frank’s personal effects were sent home to his mother in May 1919.
