One of three siblings (Donald, Dawn and Oliver) who served in the Australian Armed Forces, Colonel Dawn Valerie Vautin Jackson (Service Nos:QF90532/QFX24150/F2131) enlisted on 23 May 1941 as a Private with the Voluntary Aid Detachment, then enlisted in the Australian Army Women's Medical Services on 7 October 1941. Lieutenant Jackson served in the Middle East and New Guinea, and in 1957 was appointed Director of the Women's Royal Australian Army Corps (holding that position until 1972). On 11 June 1960 Colonel Jackson was appointed to the Order of the British Empire - Officer (Military) for her services to the Women's Royal Australian Army Corps. Colonel Jackson is credited with policy changes that enabled Australian women to serve overseas for the first time.
Dawn was born in Kent, England in 1917, second of three children of Robert Edward Jackson CMG, DSO (b1886 at Crows Nest on the Darling Downs, QLD) and Edith Margeurite Vautin (b1891 in Warracknabeal, Victoria). Robert was a Teacher in Perth in 1907 when he was Commissioned into the Commonwealth Cadets and then in 1911 into the Australian Permanent Military Forces. Robert and Edith married in Perth in 1914, and their three children were born in England. At the end of of WWI, Robert remained in the Armed Forces until his retirement. The family returned to Australia in 1924, and Robert was District Officer Commanding the 5th Military District at retirement in 1942.
Dawn enlisted the Army in 1941, serving in WWII and the Vietnam War. Dawn died in Canberra in 1995.
