Lieutenant Colonel Horace William Johnson (Service No:QX6497) initially enlisted in the Australian Army Medical Corps (AAMC) on 1 September 1939, and was a Captain attached to 9 Australian General Hospital (AGH) when he transferred to the AIF on 31 December 1940. Major Johnson served with 1st Cavalry Field Ambulance, and was attached to 9 AGH on 3 February 1941 when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for the Middle East via Bombay on board the Mauritania, returning to Port Adelaide on 15 April 1942. Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, on 8 June 1943 he embarked from Melbourne for New Guinea LAC Area on board AHS Manunda, returning from Port Moresby to Brisbane on board the Manunda on 19 November 1943. Lieutenant Colonel Johnson was attached to 9 AGH at Termination of Appointment on 8 February 1944. Older brothers Thomas (KiA) and Roland served in the AIF in WWI.

Horace was born in Warwick, QLD in 1900, fourth of eight children of William Guard Johnson (b1868 in Warwick, QLD) and Edith Emmeline Merry (b1872 in Warwick, QLD). William and Edith married in 1894, and settled in Warwick where they raised their family and William was a Merchant (WG Johnson & Sons - General Merchants). William was involved in his local community, serving as a member of the Warwick Town Council (and as Mayor in 1912), as a Justice of the Peace, Cemetery Trustee and President of the Traders' Associtaion. A keen horseman, he was one of the founding members of the Warwick Coursing Club.

Horace was academically gifted, and from Warwick State High School was awarded a scholarship to the University of Queensland. From there, Horace completed a Medical Degree (Master of Surgery) at the University of Sydney in 1925. Horace worked as a Medical Practitioner at the General Hospital in Brisbane and then Townsville, before moving abroad for three years to complete post-graduate studies. In 1937 in Brisbane he married Essil Tatham Longland (b1907 in Brisbane, QLD) - Essil was a Dancing Instructress, and worked in London in the 1930s. Horace and Essil settled in Brisbane, where they raised their family and Horace was a Medical Practitioner until his death in 1972. Essil died in 1995.
