Son of Thomas O'Neil and Martha O'Neil nee Wells of Camperdown, Victoria.

Husband of Katie O'Neil nee Kirwin of Stephens Street, South Richmond, Victoria. David and Katie married during 1915c in Victoria. Later changed to his son Charles Heffernan O'Neil of the St. Augustines Ophanage, Geelong, Victoria.

Commenced return to Australia on 20 May 1919 aboard HT Nestor disembarking on 2 July 1919
