John Ormond Lea MELEN was born in Sydney, New South Wales on 1st August, 1894

His parents were John MELEN & Susanna LEA who married in Sydney in 1885

He married Elizabeth CHORLEY in Sydney in 1916 - she gave birth to a daughter on 28th April, 1916 at her parents residence in Bathurst, NSW while John was on Active Service

He had previously served for 1 year in the Senior Cadets, 27th Battalion and 4 years in the 25th Infantry (Artillery) before he enlisted in Casula, NSW on 14th February, 1916 and embarked with the 13th Infantry Battalion, 18th Reinforcements on the HMAT Clan MacGillivray on 3rd May, 1916

John died of wounds in France on 5th February 1917 - no known grave

His name is memorialised on the Australian War Memorial & the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial
