Leonard was the seventh of eight children of Joseph Charles Kitching (born 1872 in Berwickshire, Scotland) and Eliza Ann Tite (born 1882 in Warwickshire, England). Joseph arrived in Maryborough, QLD with his parents in January 1883 on board the Shenir, and Eliza arrived in Brisbane, QLD with her parents in September 1884 on board the Quetta. Joseph grew up in Maryborough, QLD and in 1899 was a Coal Miner at Bundanba in Ipswich, QLD when he married Eliza. George and Eliza settled at Bundanba to raise their family, and George worked as a Coal Miner.

Leonard was a Coal Miner at Bundanba, Ipswich and enlisted briefly in the Army in March 1941(Service No:Q28621) before enlisting in the RAN in June 1943. He served as a Stoker (Service No:B4691) on HMAS Cerberus, Bungaree and Moreton and was Dicharged in May 1946. Older brother William Edgar served in the Army (Service No:QX28834).

Leonard returned to Ipswich, QLD and worked as a Coal Miner. He died in 2003.
