Biography

"Captain Henry Gardiner Freeman was born on 17 September 1873 at Coventry, England. Educated at Christ's Hospital, West Sussex, he was appointed an Assistant Master at St. Peter's College in August 1897. A member of the Commonwealth Cadet Corps before the war he received his commission in the AIF in 1916. Appointed a Captain in the 43rd Infantry Battalion, he was mentioned in Sir Douglas Haig's Despatch of 7 November 1917 for distinguished and gallant services and devotion to duty in the field during the period 26 February 1917 to 20 September 1917. In September 1917 he contracted Chronic Bronchitis and returned to Australia. He died in South Australia on 11 February 1940 and is buried in the Mitcham Cemetery." - SOURCE (collections.slsa.sa.gov.au)
