Albert Victor Lacey was born on 2 Jul 1911 at Wondai, the 4th of 10 children of Robert & Alma Lacey who farmed at Mondure. Albert, known as Bert, married Mary Jane Simpson on 18 Oct 1933. Bert as a labourer and his address on electoral rolls show he lived at Proston and Wooroolin before the war started.
On 9 Jul 1940, Bert travelled to Maryborough and joined the Australian Army leaving his wife and 2 children, Robert & Thomas, at Wooroolin. Not long after they moved to Inglewood Hill, Gympie. Bert’s 3 brothers also served in the Australian Army service during WW11.
Berts army records are available on the NAA website and show what he served in the 104 GENERAL TRANSPORT COMPANY AUSTRALIAN ARMY SERVICES CORPS and was discharged on 26 Dec 1942. He served in the Middle East for about a year before being shipped home. He was discharged as medically unfit for active service.
The General Transport Companies derived from Field Supply Units, and they worked to transport supply items, including ammunition, between depots.
After the war Bert continued to work as a labourer in various areas including Proston and Bundaberg. His wife died in 1962 and is buried at Bundaberg Cemetery where Bert joined her in 1997.
