67 years ago today, on the Wednesday morning of the 25th August 1954, Private James (Jim) Doak, 1st Battalion (Reg No-57), fettler from Northbrook Lane, Manilla, New South Wales and 27 Watson Street, Mayfield, N.S.W., father of five (Bob, Violet (Girlie), Ted, Tom, Alan), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 72. METHODIST 4-24. 25.

Born at Walcha, New South Wales on the 8th April 1882 to James and Margaret Doak; husband of Elizabeth Doak nee Howieson (married 1903, East Maitland, N.S.W., died 1952), Jim enlisted December 1915 with the 33rd Battalion at Armidale, N.S.W.

Wounded in action - 1.1.1917 (GSW head, dangerously ill), Jim returned home July 1917, being discharged medically unfit (GSW right temple region) on the 4th August 1917.

Mr. Doak’s name has been inscribed on the Warialda and District First World War Honor Roll, Manilla and District Soldiers' Memorial Hall and Honor Rolls (name inscribed on the Manilla and District Soldiers' Honor Roll), Manilla M.U.I.O.O.F. Honor Roll - report of Mrs. Doak unveiling the Manilla M.U.I.O.O.F. Honor Roll) and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.
Jim’s headstone inscription proudly tells us of his service for God, King and Country in 2 Wars, and I have placed poppies in remembrance of this outstanding Hero.

Service record states Died after Discharge, 23.8.1954.
