Des was the third of four children of Sydney Charles Frederick Lewis (b1893 in Brisbane, QLD) and Elizabeth (Lylia) Catherine Rose Healy (b1889 in Brisbane, QLD). Sydney - a Railways Employee - and Lylia - a Book Keeper - married in 1919 in Brisbane, QLD. They settled at Nundah to raise their family.
Des was working as a Messenger for the Taxation Department when he enlisted in the ACMF in December 1941. He was a Private (Service No:Q149353) attached to 5 Infantry Spcl Gp when he was Discharged in April 1943 for enlistment in the RAAF. Des served in the RAAF from April 1943 to December 1945 with 163 Squadron. He was a Pilot Officer (Service No:435290) attached to RAF Wyton when he was Discharged. In 1945, Des was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (London Gazette: 20 July 1945; Commonwealth of Australia Gazette: 26 July 1945).
Returning to Nundah, Des was a Public Servant in 1950 when he married Marjorie (Josie) Josephine Noonan (b1920). Josie was a Clerk in Brisbane. Des and Josie settled in brisbane, QLD where Des worked as a Public Servant. He died in 2000 and Josie in 2009.
