Frank left Outer Harbour on board the Itria on 14 August 1916, disembarking at Plymouth, England on 30 October and served with the Pioneer Training Battalion at Sutton Veny and Perham Downs prior to being sent to France with the 5th Pioneer Battalion on 11 December 1917. He was hospitalised on several occasions in early 1918 and was returned to Australia on the Marathon on 5 March and discharged as medically unfit on 22 July.
