He had previously served for 18 months in the Senior Cadets and 2 years in the Citizens Forces with the 49th Infantry before he enlisted in Melbourne on 28th June 1915 and embarked with the 21st Infantry Battalion, 7th reinforcements on the ship HMAT Wiltshire from Melbourne on 18th November 1915.
