Basil Rodney Gilbert, solider Australian Imperial Force member (AIF). Gilbert, born in 1896 in North Adelaide South Australia, was enlisted on the 31st of May 1915 at the age of 19 in Keswick SA. His service number was 808. Gilbert was a painter and unmarried at the time of enlistment.

Gilbert went into battle as a private. His known involvement was in the 27th Infantry Battalion.

He returned home in 1919 on the Port Macquarie which left England on the 28th of March and arrived in Melborne on the 9th of May. His mother was worried about his safety and sent letters during the war to check he was still alright. She was delighted to hear that he was alive even after spending some time in the hospital with gunshot wounds.

Gilbert later married Elizabeth Lucy and had six children, Allan, Jeff, Bruce, Joan, Donald, and Colin. Gilbert was known to his friends as Bob. He died on the 12th of February 1970 at 73 years of age. His wife, Elizabeth, died on the 15th of March 1980 at 87 years of age and was buried with Gilbert.
