Sergeant Alan Robert Macdonald (Service Nos:418047/Q1132/QX50227) initially enlisted in the Militia as a Signaller with Australian Corps Signals on 31 March 1938 (Trade Group Mechanic). He served in the ACMF (13 June 1941 - 7 March 1943) as a Signalller and Gunner with 5th Division Signals and 6 and 5 Anti Aircraft Batteries - Trade Group Radio Instrument Mechanic (attended the Army School of Radio Physics Sydney). Sergeant Macdonald was 'in the field' at Townsville on 8 March 1943 when he enlisted in the AIF with 36 Anti Aircraft Battery, and was a Bombardier attached to 56 Anti Aircraft Battery on Thursday Island (21 December 1943 - 23 September 1944). In 1945 Sergeant Macdonald was Marched Out to 41/2 Infantry Battalion and to Z Special Unit, and was attached to attached to 56 Australian Heavy Anti Aircraft Battery at Discharge on 2 April 1946.
Alan was born in Brisbane QLD in 1922, eldest of four children of Robert (Bob) Clement Macdonald (b1890 in Colorado, USA) and Effie Smellie Macfarlane (b1898 in Brisbane, QLD). Bob was a Carpenter in 1911 when he arrived in Brisbane on board the Kaipara, and he and Effie married in 1921. The couple lived in Atherton and Ayr before settling in Brisbane, where they raised their family and Bob was a Carpenter.
Alan worked as a Carpenter and Radio Mechanic in Brisbane before enlisting in the Army in 1938, Following his Discharge, Alan was a Student in Brisbane in 1946 when he married Isobel (Belle) Ruby Nairn (b1923 in Brisbane, QLD). Alan and Belle settled in Brisbane, where they raised their family and Alan worked as a Carpenter, Clerk with the Department of Treasury's Taxation Branch and a Manager. Alan died in 1977 and Belle in 2008.
