PAUL MAKEPEACE, the son of Mrs. Olivia Makepeace and the late Thomas Makepeace, was born at Moggill, Brisbane, on 14th March, 1894. He was educated at the Moggill State School and the Ipswich Grammar School, and entered the service of the Bank on 12th June, 1912, at Brisbane.

Holding the rank of lieutenant in the Commonwealth Military Forces, he volunteered for service in the A.I.F. on 1st August, 1915, but was retained in the Signal School as lieutenant, 1st M.D., until the 23rd February, 1917, pending appointment to a Signal Unit in the A.I.F. Resigning his commission temporarily and enlisting as a private on 8th March, 1917, he was immediately promoted to corporal and was attached to the Cavalry Divisional Signal Squadron, and later to the Australian Wireless Squadron, Mesopotamia.
