Arthur Hobbs was one of four sons of Robert and Fanny Hobbs of Mendooran, New South Wales, who served overseas during WW1. The father, Robert, had passed away during 1900.
Arthur joined the 45th Battalion in France during September 1916. He was killed in action on the 19 February 1917. In his Red Cross Wounded and Missing file several eye witnesses said he was killed by a piece of shrapnel from a German grenade whilst manning a bombing post near Gueudecourt in France. He was buried at the rear of the trench but his remains could not be found after the war.
His brother, 1664 Pte. Charles Hobbs 54th Battalion AIF, was killed in action near Bapaume only six weeks later on 29 March 1917, aged 36. Two other brothers returned to Australia.
