Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Sydney O’Loughlin lost two brothers during the Great War.

His younger brother, 828 Corporal George O'Loughlin 5th Battalion AIF, was killed in action at the Anzac Landing on 26 April 1915, aged 21.

An older brother, Captain Henry Herbert George O'Loughlin 5th Battalion AIF, was killed in action in France on 28 February 1917, aged 32.

Sydney was consequently returned to Australia for ‘family reasons’ due to the death of his two brothers. The acting secretary of the Department of Defence, Thomas Trumble, wrote to the mother of Sydney O’Loughlin during April 1917, “With reference to your letter dated 17th ultimo, I am directed to inform you that a cable has been sent to the Australian Authorities in London, advising that your son, Gunner Sydney O’Loughlin, may be returned to Australia.

You will receive due notification from the Officer in charge Base Records as to the date your son leaves England for Australia.”
