Mavis Gwendoline Marshall - QX55058 (Q144322) - Wooroolin WW11 Honour Board

Gwen Marshall was born 16 Dec 1904 at Kunioon, Qld, the 3rd child of Frederic Marshall & Catherine Logan. The Marshall Family owned the farm known as Cedar Gap at Wooroolin from 1903 and the last 3 children Jessie, Muriel & Clarice were all registered at Wooroolin School. I have not found a schooling record for Gwen or her brother Stan at Wooroolin.
In 1927 when Gwen was 23 years old she left the farm to go to Maryborough to train as a nurse. In 1936 Gwen was nursing at Wondai General Hospital then back to Maryborough General Hospital where her sister Muriel was also a Nurse.
On 2 Jan 1942 Gwen enlisted in the Australian Army Nursing Service whilst working at Bundaberg General Hospital. Her Army records are available on the NAA website and show she nursed in both QLD & VIC Military Hospitals looking after the wounded direct from the battlefront.
Gwen had a distinguished Nursing Career which saw her travel to Sydney & Melbourne where she became Charge Sister and Acting Matron at the Queen Victoria Hospital. During 1949/50 Gwen took 12 months leave of absence and travelled and worked in UK for 12 months to experience nursing in other countries. One of the hospitals she worked at was North Middlesex Hospital in Edmonton, London.
Gwen lived her retirement in Brisbane helping many people through her work with Kalparrin, the Presbyterian Church Mission Shop. Gwen died in 1994, aged 89. She was cremated and her ashes are interred in the Rose Garden at Albany Creek Memorial Garden, Bridgeman Downs.
It is with thanks to Gwen’s Nephew Graeme via his wife Lynne Robert for so much background on this woman on our Wooroolin WW11 Honour Board.
