Kathleen was the youngest of two children of James (Fred) Frederick McCafferty Snr (born 1878 on the Darling Downs in QLD) and Kathleen Lysaght (born 1884 in Cooktown, QLD). James had been a Farmer on the Darling Downs, and in 1914 was a Labourer in Cairns when he married Kathleen, who was a Barmaid in Cairns. 

Kathleen was a Shop Assistant at New Farm in Brisbane, QLD when she enlisted in the Australian Army  in May 1943. She was a Private (Service Nos:QX52053/Q271013) attached to the Australian Army Medical Women's Services when she was Discharged in December 1945. Brother James Frederick Jnr (Private. Service Nos:QX53349/Q116540) also served in WWII.

Returning to Cairns, Kathleen married John Ambrose Madden (born 1916 in Herberton, QLD) in 1952. John served as a Private (Service No:QX3523) with 2/32 Infantry Battalion in WWII. They settled in Cairns where John worked as a Clerk until Kathleen' death in 1963, when he worked as a Watchman.
