"DEATH OF CAPTAIN ARTHUR VERGE
Captain Arthur Verge A.A.M.C. better known as "Johnnie" Verge died of illness at Ghezireh, Egypt, on the 8th Inst. Captain Verge was the second son of Mr. Austral Verge of Kempsey, Macleay River, where he was bom 35 years ago. He attended the King's School, Parramatta, for some years where he distinguished himself on the football field and from there he went to Sydney University, where he graduated in medicine and surgery. He played with the University Union Football Team, and was full-back for three seasons. He represented the State and Australia in the position of full-back. After qualifying as a doctor the deceased went to England, and did a post-graduate course at Edinburgh University. He then crossed over to the Continent and studied skin diseases. In 1909 he returned to the State, and carried on his profession as a doctor in Macquarie-street. He left Sydney as medical officer to the Sixth Light Horse Regiment." - from the Sydney Morning Herald 24 Sep 1915 (nla.gov.au)
