His brother, 1767 Trooper Walter Starr, 7th Light Horse Regiment, died of wounds inflicted at Romani, Egypt, during August 1916.

Edward was 19 years old when he started a Dairy Short Course at Hawkesbury Agricultural College in July 1914. Whilst at the College he competed as a Middleweight boxer. Edward then gained the Butter making and Cheese making certificates in February 1915.

Edward enlisted 3 February 1916 in the 33rd Battalion as a Private. At the time of volunteering, he was a dairyman and grazier near Tabulam, NSW.

He was promoted to Lance Corporal in June 1917, then Corporal in July 1917, before he went missing at Passchendaele on 13 October 1917. His remains were found near Passchendaele in Belgium Edward during 1920 and reinterred in Tyne Cot Cemetery.
