Private Desmond Leslie Meggitt (Service Nos:Q146320/QX45180) initially enlisted in the ACMF on 9 February 1942, and was a Gunner (Trade Group - Gun Layer) attached to 2/33 Infantry Battalion on 19 December 1942 when he enlisted in the AIF. Private Meggitt served with 2/2 Pioneer Battalion in New Guinea (2 September 1943 - 8 February 1944) and Borneo (Morotai, Tarakan and Balikapan: 16 April 1944 - 14 March 1946), and was attached to 2/2 Pioneer Battalion at Discharge on 15 November 1946.

Des was born in Brisbane QLD in 1923 to Leslie (Les) Frederick Meggitt (b1902 in Ipswich, QLD) and Alice Pauline Grant (b1904 in Brisbane, QLD). Les was a Salesman in Brisbane in 1923 when he and Alice married. The couple settled in Brisbane, where they raised their family and Les was a Salesman and then Department Manager for Brittains Pty Lty. In the 1950s Les was elected Vice President of the Brisbane Merchants' Association. Les and Alice retired to Caloundra.

Des was a Warehouse Assistant in 1942 when he enlisted in the Army, and was a Travelling Salesman with Hoffnung & Coy in Brisbane in 1949 when he married Gloria Ellis (b1924 in Longreach, QLD) - Gloria was working in Brisbane as a Telephonist. Des and Gloria settled in Brisbane, where Des was a Travelling Salesman until retirement. Des died in 2006 and Gloria in 2010.
