Lance Corporal Gilbert Lawrence Meng (Service No:QX46702) initially enlisted in the ACMF as a Private (Service No:Q128182) and served with 105 Motor Transport Reserve Coy AASC and 112 General Transport Coy before enlisting in the AIF on 12 January 1943. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 7 July 1943 and was attached to 112 General Transport Coy at Discharge on 6 December 1945.

Born in Mackay QLd in 1915, Gilbert was the youngest child of Lauritzen (Laurence) Jensen Meng (b1884 in Mackay, QLD) and Mary Ellen Adams (b1890 in Mackay, QLD). Laurence (a Blacksmith) and Mary married in 1910 in Walkerston nr Mackay, QLD where they settled and raised their family and Laurence worked as a Blacksmith. In the mid 1920s the family moved to Ipswich, QLD.

Gilbert worked as a General Hand/Labourer in Ipswich QLD and, in 1938 he married Phyllis Margaret Hillier (b1912 in Oxley, Brisbane, QLD) - Phyllis was a Dressmaker. Gilbert and Phyllis settled in Ipswich, QLD where Gilbert was a General Hand when he enlisted in the Army in 1942. Following his Discharge, the family settled at Sandgate nr Brisbane QLD where Gilbert was a Garage Atttendant and later Proprietor. Phyllis died in 1991 and Gilbert in 1994
