Norman (Jnr) was the third of four children of Norman Metcalfe (born 1892 in Brisbane, QLD) and Alice May Collins (born 1888 in NSW). Norman (Snr) and Alice married in 1912 in Cairns, QLD and raised their children there.

Norman was living in Tully, QLD and working as a Labourer when he enlsited in the Australian Army in 1940. He served with 26 Australian Infantry Battalion as a Private (Service Nos: QX38182/Q109263), He was Discharged in 1946 and returned to Cairns where he worked as a Contractor.

Brothers - George (Service No: Q221805) and William (Service No: Q3842/340085/3905004) -  also served in WWII.

In 1950 Norman married Eva Nancy Butler (born 1919 in Korumburra, Victoria) Eva had been Nursing in Melbourne, Victoria and in 1949 moved to Cairns, QLD where she was Nursing when she and Norman married.

Norman and Eva lived at Ord Tank Siding in Chillagoe, QLD where Norman worked as Miner, before they settled in Cairns in 1959. Norman worked as a Glazier, and in 1975 was a Salesman. Eva died in 1972
