Biography

"TASMANIAN CASUALTIES. PERSONAL NOTES

Private Percy Cyril Cameron, second eldest son of Mr and Mrs. Wm. Cameron, of Mangana, was killed in action on July 22. The sad news was received on Tuesday night, and (writes our correspondent) was a shock to the family and their friends. This brave lad was one of the first recruits from Mamgana to volunteer, and it is nearly four years since ho went into camp. He was in the 12th Battalion, and was amongst those to land on Gallipoli. He was wounded the first day, and returned to Egypt. Later he returned to the Peninsula, and after some time took ill, and was sent home. He remained at home for two months or so, and again left for the front, and was actively engaged till his death. His brother Don has been discharged as medically unfit. Both these lads have nobly done their duty, and we are all proud of them. To the bereaved family we express our heartfelt sympathy, and trust that in time they will become reconciled to the loss they have sustained. Percy Cameron's name is the first on the school honor roll. He was a favorite with all. The flag at the school was flown half-mast on Wednesday. It is understood the deceased was the last member of the original 12th Battalion." - from the Launceston Daily Telegraph 16 Aug 1918 (nla.gov.au)
