Add my storyBiography contributed by Evie Murray
William was a volunteer who enlisted for active duty.
At first, he was stationed in Darwin but shortly after, he contracted Pleurisy and was confined to hospital when his seventh division was sent to fight in the Middle East. Most of the seventh division were killed which would have impacted Williams mental state.
When he was fit enough to return to duty he was sent to New Guinea to fight the Japanese Army, who were advancing their soldiers into New Guinea.
This was a particularly hard fought defense of a very famous trail called the Kokoda Trail, which is located in the Owen Stanley Ranges, in the heart on New Guinea.
If not for the efforts of William and many thousands of other Australian men, who gave their lives, we would very easily not enjoy the life we have today in this proud country we call Australia.
Williams participation in World War II involved many types of soldiering including everything from building roads to fighting in combat with the Japanese soldiers.
