Vernon Nicholas O'Brien was born on 11 Nov 1911 in Brisbane, a son to Nicholas O'Brien and Helena Kate Amelda O'Brien (nee O'Donovan). His father was Major Nicholas O'Brien a veteran of the South African (Boer) War and both World Wars- Corp. S.N. 228, 5th Qld. Imp. Bushmen Boer War; Capt., 3rd Div. Signal Coy. AIF WW1; Major, Aust. Signals Corp. A.H.Q. AIF WW2.
Vernon was a qualified pharmacist when he enlisted for WW2 in 1940 and was classed as Trade Group 2 and assigned to the D. M. & V. Stores in Brisbane before serving in various locations in Qld.
