Son of Patrick Joseph O'Neill and Lucy O'Neill nee Smith of Edward Street, Dalby, QLD

Brother of William James O'Neill who died of disease on 8 August 1918 while serving with the 5th Light Horse Regiment and is buried in the Gaza War Cemetery. Plot XXX11, Row F, Grave 7; Thomas Joseph O'Neill who returned to Australia on 17 July 1916 having served with the 11th Light Horse Regiment; Patrick O'Neill who returned to Australia having served with the 2/11 Field Company in WW2.

Commenced return to Australia on 12 July 1919 aboard  HT City of Essex on 26 August 1919
