2nd Lt. Harry Gordon Tinney RFC was lost on 13th August 1917 in a SPAD 7 of 23rd Squadron - a fighter unit. He left on patrol - likely to be low bombing or an offensive patrol - at 9am and was seen going down in a spin near Langemarck before flattening out and going south, to be subsequently captured by the Germans. The 23rd Squadron was being hit hard at this time - he was the fourth captured or killed pilot in the previous five days. Tinney hailed from Dean near Ballarat, Victoria, had enlisted at only 18 years of age and had previously served with the Australian Cycling Corps in France. He was repatriated to England and left there for return to Australia in May 1919.
