Claude Clarke enlisted in January 1915 and saw service at Gallipoli, before he was evacuated sick during August 1915. He served in France, for almost three years, and was returned to Australia in December 1918 with debility.
He passed away in the Australian General Hospital, Launceston from a combination of pneumonia, influenza, and heart failure, aged 31.
His older brother, 5670 Pte. Charles Edmond Clarke 40th Battalion AIF, had died of wounds on 19 December 1916, aged 31.
Their mother was Mrs. Ellen Clarke, an elderly widow, who had also lost another adopted son, 3938 Pte. William Arthur Clarke 12th Battalion AIF, who had died of sickness 8 May 1916., aged 22.
A nephew, son of one of Claude’s sisters, and in the same Company as Claude, also died at Pozieres in 1916, 3292 Pte. Charles Henry Hayward 12th Battalion AIF.
