Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Known as Pitt Joseph he was one of three brothers who enlisted in the AIF during WW1. They were the sons of William Morris Joseph and Emma Amelia Joseph, of Carlton, in the Sorell area of Tasmania.

Pitt had enlisted in the Australian Naval Force in 1904 and served aboard the English warship HMS Challenger. In an advertisement placed in a Hobart newspaper during 1908 he was being challenged to a boxing match by an I.T.A. Stacey from Nubeena. The match was to take place in Hobart and the best of 15 rounds. Winner to take ten pounds.

Pitt arrived at the Western Front during October 1916 and was killed in action during the Battle of Broodseinde in Belgium exactly telve months later.

His younger brother, 3451 Cpl. Paul Hamilton Morris Joseph 48th Battalion AIF, was killed in action on 3 May 1918, aged 29.

The youngest brother, 1841 Pte. Erle Joseph 12th Battalion AIF, was the first to enlist from his family in 1915 and survived three serious woundings to return to Australia during late 1918.
