Clarence was the fifth of eight children of Robert Morrison Phister (born 1863 in Ipswich, QLD) and Janet King (born 1871 in Leyburn, QLD). In 1890 Robert was a Labourer when he married Janet, and they settled on the Darling Downs in QLD to raise their family.
Clarence had worked as a Barman at his brother's (George) hotel at Grantham on the Darling Downs, and in 1939 was working as a Cook in Toowoomba, QLD when he enlisted in the Army. He was a Private (Service No:QX1488) when he Discharged in September 1940 to enlist in the RAAF. He was a Leading Aircraftman (Service No:23633) with No 3 Fighter Section Townsville when he was Discharged in September 1942. His Uncle Alfred (aka as John Luscombe, Trooper, Service No: 1437) served in the Boer War; Brothers Roy (Private; Service No:6551) and George (Private, Service No:6547) served in WWI; and Brothers Samuel (Leading Aircraftman, Service No:77496), Cyril (Private, Service No:QX1038), Percy (Private, Service No:Q141487) and Gordon (Staff Sergeant, Service No:QX16310) and Brother-in-Law David George Ashlin (Sapper, Service No:QX29717) served in WWII.
Clarence settled in Brisbane after the War, where he worked as a Barman, before becoming a Storekeeper in Camp Hill, Brisbane in the 1960s and at Point Lookout on Stradbroke Island in the mid 1970s. Clarence died in 1978.
