John's parents were Edgar Frank Protheroe and Ellen Hare. The Protheroes are a well-known family from the Dayboro district. John is listed on the 1903 electoral rolls as living at North Pine and his occupation was a Blacksmith. John enlisted on 21 August 1915. He was wounded in action in 1918, John returned to Australian in 1919. He is listed with his wife Ethel on the 1925 electoral roll living at Palmwoods Queensland, his occupation was a farmer. John also served in World War 2, he died aged 80.
