Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

Son of George RAINEY and Adelaide RAINEY nee WELCH, Cocks Road, Chermside, Brisbane, Qld.

Husband of Phoebe RAINEY, Cania Road, Monto, Qld.

Pte James (Jim) Henry Rainey (3653), was born on 7 July 1899 at Wooloowin (Brisbane) and lived at Chermside until his enlistment in 1918. He died in April/May 1988 of natural causes, just short of his 89th birthday.

He moved to Monto, Qld, with his wife, Phoebe Rainey (nee Hipathite), where they raised three children, Noreen, Gloria, and James Henry Jnr, until relocating to Scarborough (near Brisbane) where he re-enlisted in 1941. They would remain there until their deaths.

The back boundary of the Rainey family farm where Jim grew up adjoined the Chermside Army Camp, so Jim and his mates watched the soldiers from his house until they were of enlistment age. The four mates then trained at Enoggera before sailing on the Ormonde on 2 March 1918.
