Biography

Garnet Michael (Mick) Hanlon was born in Drayton, Queensland in 1895, he moved to Roma, Queensland around 1911 and was employed as a Carpenter. He was a member of the Darling Downs Militia in Roma prior to the war. 

He enlisted on 26th July 1915, trained at Ennogera before leaving for Egypt on HMAT "Seang Bee" on 21st October 1915. He was initially attached to 9th Battalion (11th reinforcements) but was taken on strength to 'A' Coy,49th Battalion while there. He left Egypt and arrived in France on 12th June, 1916 just prior to the "Battle of the Somme".

He fought with his Battalion around Mouquet Farm, where his good mate Bill Taylor is killed on 3rd Sept 1916, and later as they made their way to Deville Wood, Mick and another soldier are hit by machine gun fire. Mick is hit in the leg, is moved to an aid post, then AGH at Rouen, where he had his right leg amputated. He was repatriated to England for further treatment. He returned to Australia on 13th September 1917.

He passed away on 21st November 1962 aged 67 years
