Ernest Alfred Cotton was born on May 7, 1893, to Fredrick and Louisa Cotton in North Adelaide, South Australia. They resided on Alexander Street, Prospect, South Australia. Ernest was educated at the Brompton School and was part of the Islington Methodist Football Club and St Ninian’s Cricket Club. His occupation was a plasterer.

Ernest Alfred Cotton enlisted on July 22, 1915, and embarked on October 27, 1915, at the age of 22 from Adelaide, South Australia on board HMAT A24 Benalla. He was part of the 10th Infantry battalion, 11th Reinforcement with the rank of Private.  He was transferred to the 50th battalion on February 26, 1916. He was then moved to the 10th battalion on February 14, 1917.

Ernest Alfred Cotton was killed in action on May 6, 1917, in Noreuil, France at a young age of 24. He was buried at the Noreuil Australian Cemetery, Row F, Grave No. 5, France.
