Son of John Vallender and Rebecca Vallender nee Blackburn of 'Ryan's Creek', Benalla, Victoria. Brother of Robert Blackburn Vallender who returned to Australia on 29 June 1919 having served with the 1st Field Artillery Brigade

Commenced return to Australia on 31 January 1919 aboard HT Ceramic disembarking on 23 March 1919
