Douglas Niemann was born in March 1883 in Noarlunga, South Australia. He was a Horse Driver with a wife and two children. Niemann was 5.9” and was weighed 152 pounds.

Niemann enlisted on the 20th of September 1915 at the Mitcham recruitment station. He embarked for Egypt on the 22nd of November 1915 aboard the H.J tboe Before disembarking to the Suez Canal for training. Niemann then embarked again 17th of March 1916, this time for France. He was promoted to Battery Sergeant Major in August 1916 and served with the 6th Field Artillery Brigade throughout the war, fighting at battles such as Pozieres, Bullecourt and Third Ypres.

Niemann went to the hospital in France due to pyorrhoea and bad gum health and rejoined his battalion on the 3rd of March 1919.
