Douglas Henry Saul
Douglas Henry Saul (1915-1972)
Warrant Officer Class 2
Service Number: QX38048, Q16911
Douglas was born on 4 December 1915, the twelfth of thirteen children born to James Henry and Mary Saul. Douglas was born at Sandgate, a suburb of Brisbane. James was 55 when Douglas was born. So, Doug would have spent many more hours with his parent s than his older siblings. Sadly, he would never know most of them as they would die before he was born. Brother James Henry enlisted in the AIF on 8 October 1915, a month before Doug was born. He was killed in action on 16 April 1917 in France. Another brother, William returned from the war but died in 1923, a damaged man. After his schooling, Doug obtained work as a carter and produce buyer. He lived at 33 Southerden Street Sandgate with his parents, sister Annie and brother Ronald until he enlisted in the 2nd AIF on 7 September 1940. He joined the 9th Battalion on 22 September 1941 and served in New Guinea from 2 August 1942 until 10 January 1944. Doug contracted malaria and returned to Australia. He was discharged on 15 May 1946.
After the war, Doug lived with his mother and sister Annie until his mother passed away in 1953. In 1952, Doug won fifth prize in the Golden Casket lottery - £300! He worked as a blacksmith and gas company worker. Doug never married and lived with his unmarried sister Annie at 34 Speight Street Brighton until they both passed, Doug on 5 June 1980 and Annie on 14 June 1972. They are buried together in Pinnaroo cemetery, Bridgeman Downs, Queensland.
