Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery
Served during The Great War, resting peacefully but anonymously at Sandgate Cemetery.
73 years ago today, on the 18th March 1949, Private John Howell Powell, 4th Battalion (Reg No-7040), labourer or miner from Railway Street, Merewether, New South Wales and Church Street, Newcastle, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 83. CONGREGATIONAL-5CSW. 31.
Born at Merewether, New South Wales on the 21st May 1865 to William and Margaret Powell, John enlisted October 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W. (stated age 44, actual age 51!).
John returned home September 1917, being discharged medically unfit (overage) on the 16th October 1917.
Mr Powell’s name has not been inscribed on the Merewether (Mitchell Park) Memorial Gates (John Powell M.M., 13th Battalion, name inscribed) or any known War Memorial or Roll of Honour.
I located John resting in an unmarked grave, forgotten, so March 2021 I placed a cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite, taken a photo of the grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service.
