Merchant Navy and Australian Antarctic Exploration
Before his service in World War 1, Abraham was working as an Able Seaman aboard the Steam Vessel 'Port Morant'. He is listed in Merchant Navy log books from the year 1901. His attestation papers mention 10 years of service in the Navy.
In 1911 he was employed as a cook on the Steam Yacht 'Aurora' on Sir Douglas Mawson's Australasian Antarctic Expedition. He was part of the crew that took the three landing parties from Tasmania to Macquarie Island and the two stations on continental Antarctica.
It seems that after the Antarctic expedition, Abraham stayed in Australia, owing to the fact he attested in Claremont, Tasmania in 1915.
