Son of William Charles Upston and Sarah Upston nee Shaw of St. Kilda, Victoria. Brother of George Leslie Upston who was killed in action on 22 August 1916 and has no known grave. His name appears on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial.

Husband of Lucy Eliza Upston nee Browne of Nepean Road, Brighton, Victoria. William and Lucy married during 1894c in Victoria.

22 January 1916 - enlisted at Melbourne with the 21st Battalion and with the rank of Private

Commenced return to Australia on 24 August 1918 aboard HT Medic disembarking on 11 October 1918 

Medals: British War Medal, Victory Medal

16 November 1918 - discharged at the 3rd Military District as medically unfit
