Edwin Francis Fairclough

Edwin was born on 19th September 1881 in Norwood, South Australia.
He had a job as a wharf laborer and he married Alice Evelyn Biglands on 10th November 1909. Edwin and Alice lived in a house at Carlisle Street Glanville and had six children.

His first child was born on 26th March 1910 and he was named Edwin John Francis Fairclough.

His second child was born on 2nd January 1912 and she was named Doreen Elizabeth Fairclough.

His third child was born on 12th January 1915 and she was named Olive Joyce Fairclough.

Edwin was 33 years old when he enlisted into the Australian Imperial Force on the 6th March 1915 at the Keswick Barracks (his own written enlistment papers say he was 32). He left Australia on the 23rd June 1915 and landed on the shores of Gallipoli on the 6th August 1915.
During his time fighting on the Gallipoli Peninsula he became quite ill. He fought the Turks for 8 months whilst suffering from chronic rheumatism and debility.
Edwin left the Gallipoli Peninsula on the 11th April 1916 and travelled back to Australia aboard the HMAT Runic, landing in Australia on the 16th May 1916.
Edwin was discharged from the Australian Imperial Force on the 3rd October 1916 and went back to his married life.

His fourth child was born on 18th February 1917 and she was named Alice Gwendoline Fairclough.

His fifth child was born on 21st July 1919 and he was named Jack Henry Fairclough.

His sixth child was born on 22nd October 1923 and she was named Gwenda Evelyn Fairclough.

Edwin Francis Fairclough went on to live for a further 9 years before succumbing
to his illnesses and dying on the 4th September 1932.
He is buried in the Australian Imperial Force Cemetery at West Terrace in Adelaide.
